To apply for the Rhodes Scholarship, you must meet or exceed the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford (https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/courses-a-z-listing).
However, due to the intense international competition for places at the University of Oxford, candidates with a First-Class Honor’s Degree, a GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher, or an equivalent qualification have a better chance of successful admission.
The suitability varies based on your situation and the area you are seeking to represent; please refer to the Information for Candidates booklet for your area for further details. It's important to ensure that non-native English speakers verify their ability to meet Oxford University's advanced language criteria when applying to Oxford. First, you should submit your application for the Rhodes Scholarship. After the selection process, applicants who are chosen must then submit a separate application for their desired program of study using the University of Oxford's graduate application form, with assistance from the Rhodes House team. This implies that applications for the Rhodes Scholarship in 2024 are intended for admission to the University of Oxford in October 2025. The selection committees consist of Rhodes Scholars and community leaders from diverse backgrounds. The interview holds significant importance as it is where the selection committees can evaluate a candidate's level of involvement, achievements, and goals. By asking questions, committee members spark conversations that will help them determine who best embodies the potential they are seeking. Demonstrated intellectual and academic accomplishments of a high caliber are the primary qualities expected of Scholars. However, they must also demonstrate outstanding character, leadership in extracurricular activities, and a dedication to serving the public good. Therefore, the interview will cover a wide range of topics, intended to assess candidates' intellectual abilities and analytical skills as well as uncover their character, fundamental commitments, and potential to make a positive contribution to society. The scholarship awarded by the Rhodes Trust includes coverage for Oxford University course fees and an annual stipend.
For the 2023-24 academic year, the stipend amounts to £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month), which is used by Scholars to cover all living expenses, including accommodation. This amount will be adjusted for the upcoming academic year in June. It's important to note that this amount is not enough to support partners or dependents.
After being chosen for the Scholarship, the Rhodes Trust will take care of the fee needed to apply for studies at the University of Oxford. Additionally, the Trust will cover the expenses for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), allowing international students to utilize the UK's National Health Service. The Rhodes Trust will also provide for two economy-class flights for the commencement and conclusion of studies at Oxford.
Scholars start their residency in Oxford in late September following their selection. The academic year at Oxford University starts in October, so scholars chosen in 2024 will begin their studies at Oxford in October 2025. Scholarships cannot be accelerated or delayed to a later academic year. What GPA is required to apply for the Rhodes scholarship?
